Open Access, the diamond route: the PLATO project

The PLATO (Platinum Open Access Funding) project, led by 6 universities* and co-financed by swissuniversities, aims to develop a sustainable funding model for scientific publishing in the “diamond” (also called “platinum”) open access route.

The diamond route is a variant of the golden route. Journals are funded, directly or indirectly, by non-commercial and non-profit organizations and associations. This funding model allows the publication of scientific articles online, with open access and free of charge, both for the author and for the readers. The published material is generally released by default under a Creative Commons license, allowing authors to retain their copyright.

In its first phase, PLATO mapped the current landscape of diamond publishing in Switzerland. Plato has just published the complete data of this first study (Daniela Hahn, Jennifer Hehn, Christian Hopp, & Gernot Pruschak. (2023). Mapping the Swiss Landscape of Diamond Open Access Journals. The PLATO Study on Scholar-Led Publishing. Report (1.0). Zenodo. https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7461728)
